1. Add a headshot
You’d be surprised at how many LinkedIn profiles don’t have a head shot. Your profile picture is essentially the first form of introduction that you will have with someone via LinkedIn and holds a lot of weight in first impressions.
Your face should take up at least 60% of the image, long-distance shots are no good. Clothing is important too. Portray yourself as you normally would in a professional environment. And most importantly, SMILE!
2. Include more than just your job title in your headline
It’s not an unwritten rule to only have your job title in your LinkedIn profile. In fact, your headline is your profiles most valuable real estate so having more than just your job title is vital. Write something that resonates. Mention your specialty and what you could bring to your next employer.
3. Put together a detailed and interesting summary
The main thing we have to say here is don’t feel the need to use all 2,000 characters. In fact, make a conscious effort not to do so. Try keep your summary between 1,000 and 1,250 characters to ensure that people don’t lose interest. Keep it concise, relevant and gripping.
4. Ask for recommendations and skill endorsements
This is essential in making your profile stand out. Employers are eager to find out what others think of you and your work. When asking for a recommendation, don’t just think of past employers. Make use of colleagues, vendors, customers or anyone that can vouch for your work and professionalism.
5. Keep your profile active
Although you can benefit from LinkedIn in regard to recruitment, job hunting and even being head hunted, LinkedIn is a two-way system. Make sure you engage with other people’s posts that are relevant and interesting to you and also share your own content to keep others engaged.
Joining groups is also a great way to meet likeminded professionals who you can share ideas and best practice with.
